Danger: American Democracy at Work
What is this so-called ‘liberal élite’?
I never seem to meet them in the street.
Mind you, I stay at home a lot and cower
The streets are full of rednecks seeking power.
These Toughs are nasty, dumb and (what’s more) armed
I think I’ve every right to be alarmed.
Why did so many vote for Donald Trump?
How does he lure the intellectual rump?
He ‘governs’ over Twitter, Fox TV,
The Lower Classes love it, as you see
The Internet’s alive with ‘news’ both real and fake
I don’t know how much more of this to take
I sent my kids to Harvard, MIT
It’s time they started looking after me
The masses have their hero, where is mine?
Which brilliant child of ours will stand and shine?
The demagogues have half the people's ear
They lie and flatter, instil loyalty through fear
Their followers are deplorable and wrong
They didn’t stay in College very long.
What kind of education did they get?
They get their ‘information’ on the ‘net.
If they had studied books like you and me
They’d understand the issues and agree

The ‘liberal élite’ is you and me
A dialogue is needed with The Others
Consider them our sisters and our brothers.
