Doing Seventy
Whatever idiot it was that said time flies
It isn’t true, the opposite applies
Time plummets, scorning Einstein’s laws
White knuckle ride that you can’t pause
And time speeds up as it goes by
Doing seventy now, the limit's nigh
The Time Police may question you
From time to time; it's what they do
They pull me over now and then
They'll book me one day, God knows when
But doing seventy’s no crime
That is my speed; this is my time
But in the meantime, in free-fall
The rushing air blocks out the call
There's so much thinking left to think
Talk to talk and wine to drink
The more time's gone the less remains
There's less space left in all our brains
And yet there's no less left to learn
Wake up! Don't watch that candle burn
Whatever's left to do, make haste
Let no distraction go to waste
Give impulse action, straight away
They call you crazy anyway
And if I’m grumpy – no surprise
As time goes by you realise
There’s only you that's really sane
The world’s gone mad, it's all a pain
No time these days to suffer fools
No time for pettifogging rules
Get these buffoons away from me
I'm very busy, can't they see?
I've seen it all before, my friends
I know just how this story ends
But first the final Act plays out
Here comes the climax, have no doubt
Whatever dramas went before
They’ve only left me wanting more
I’m doing seventy, clear my way
Carpe diem, seize the day.
