What are your intentions?

A summer evening, flying back to base

A route I’ve flown a hundred times before

Abruptly chucks a challenge in my face

With practised calm, a voice tells me the score

“There’s been a crash, your destination’s closed”

I know what’s coming next, it’s in the book

The standard question every pilot knows

No standard answer gets you off the hook

“What are your intentions?”

Another evening, this time safe at home

The news is on, I lend it half an ear

An awful truth is told in measured tones

The like of which I never thought I’d hear

A war in Europe, sudden as a bomb

Without a plan the homeless thousands flee

A leader under siege speaks with aplomb

His broadcast has a message just for me

“What are your intentions?”
