A Thousand Words in Biro Art class last week was entitled 'Ephemera and Biro Art'. It was inspired by London-based artist Mark Powell who (among others) likes to draw on old pages of books, old maps, envelopes and other 'ephemera. What's more, he does this in ordinary everyday black biro - none of your fancy artists' materials. We were given a tatty page torn from an old book, a cheap plastic biro, and a photo of a characterful lined face to draw. I felt like giving up then and there. You can't rub biro out if you get it wrong. The paper is friable, and covered in distracting print. Once I got into the drawing I absolutely loved it. You can see my effort here.
