My second attempt to record the progress of a drawing. This time a portrait done in watercolour pencil on sketching paper. Water applied by paintbrush onto watercolour pencil marks performs a similar function to the smudging stick on a graphite pencil drawing, except that here the water also activates the colour, making it more intense (usually). In this drawing, not all the marks were activated with water - I wanted to keep the definition of the hair fairly strandy, for example. My little set of watercolour pencils has only a very limited palette, hence the rather odd colouring on this pretty face, and in particular the (blonde) hair.

I thought the subject was interesting because of the subtlety of the facial expression, conveying (to me) a charming blend of pleasure, intimacy, amusement and a certain innocent smugness at having captured this moment in a selfie.
